Where the file goes

Most of these tools never see your document

Not as a policy, as an architecture. Nine of them run inside the page you have open, which means there is nothing to send and nothing to trust.

Start with a tool that stays localMerging, splitting, pages

That distinction gets flattened in most marketing into a vague promise about privacy. It is worth keeping sharp, because the two halves behave completely differently.

Runs in your browser — the file never leaves

  • JPG and PNG to PDF
  • PDF to JPG, PNG or TXT
  • Merge PDFs
  • Split a PDF
  • Rotate pages
  • Delete or extract pages
  • Add a watermark
  • Add page numbers
  • Sign a PDF

Needs the conversion service — the file is sent

  • PDF to Word
  • PDF to Excel
  • Word, Excel or PowerPoint to PDF

Why the line falls there

Rearranging pages is bookkeeping: the document already contains its pages and the work is changing their order, rotation or presence. A browser can do that on the file sitting in memory.

Rebuilding a Word document from a page description is a different order of work. It needs a rendering engine and a conversion pipeline that no web page carries, so those three tools send the file to a service that has one.

Stated as the product states it

  • The page tools work inside your browser, so those files are never sent anywhere
  • PDF to Word, PDF to Excel and Office to PDF are converted on the server, and the result is deleted after 60 minutes
  • Deleting your account removes your data, apart from billing records that have to be kept
